GIMP FX Foundry

Recently I installed the GIMP FX Foundry. This can be downloaded from FX Foundry homepage.

This gave me a vast array of new goodies within the GIMP. It provided all kinds of new scripts like, Lomo effect and soft focus. I got a lot of new features in the 'filters' menu, but I also got a new 'FX Foundry' menu item.

It's almost if I just doubled (or even tripled) the possibilities of the GIMP. try it out for yourself!

GIMP 2.6 Cookbook is out!

When your main interest in photography is taking pictures of (urban) landscapes and other cultures, chances are that you’re doing a lot of traveling. While traveling you make a lot of pictures and you don’t always remember where you’ve made what picture. Keeping track of where you made what picture proofs to be quite a hassle sometimes.

Reviewing a book on the GIMP 2.6

Hi All,

I’ve been approached by a computer book publisher and lately I’ve been reviewing a book on the GIMP 2.6. Therefore, I haven’t been updating this website much lately.

I’m sorry for that. Hopefully I can give you some news soon.

And when I’m finished reviewing the GIMP 2.6 book (no time estimate yet) I will of course let you all know about my findings. Who knows, maybe I will finally start a review on the GIMP on this website.

Meanwhile, I you have any suggestions on things to put on this website, please let me know. Your input will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Nedo

Custom snoot

Why spend up to 26 euros on a snoot when you can easily make you own?

I made this custom snoot from a piece of thick paper. It’s 295 mm long, but ofcourse you can cut to any length you want.
The paper is a standard A4 size. This happens to fit just right around my Canon EX430 flasher.
Just some paper, staples and tape. Oh, and 5 minutes work.

Photography with Open Source / Linux

I recently received a notice about an article on Open Source and Photography. I read it and I love it. It’s an article by Nathan Willis.

The article describes the various photo-applications available on Linux. It gives the reader a better understanding of what application is out there and what you can actually use it for. I found this article to be very useful for anyone using or wanting to use Linux for their photographic needs.

Be sure to check it out for yourself at http://blog.worldlabel.com/2010/photography-with-open-source-linux.html!

[A little preview]

Shotwell – Open Source Photomanager

On the internet I came across an article about a new piece of open source software for managing your photo’s.

It is being called a combination of F-spot (brrr) and Picasa with the emphasis on the best features of both programs combined into one application.

I haven’t tried it yet. Maybe it’s because I see you no practical use in Picasa (and it’s proprietary software!) and I have always discouraged people to use F-spot. See my my review for more info on F-spot. I will therefore not make a review about this software.

The GIMP hdr plugin

On the internet I came across a GIMP script for HDR (High Dynamic Range) techniques.
Exposure blend filter.

Instead of using Qtpfsgui this script does virtually the same, but is somewhat easier to use. When you click on the link you can download the script file (.scm) and view examples en a tutorial.

Download the scm file and place it in your GIMP scripts directory (e.g.: /home//gimp-2.6/scripts for GIMP 2.6+ users)

Opensource Firmware for the Canon 5D Mark II

Canon 5D Mark II
The Open Source firmware for the 5D Markll will add extra features in video mode. Ofcourse, this will probably void your warranty so use at own risk. But don’t worry. Thousends of people already dowloaded it and so far there are no reports of damaged cameras.
